You may not want to give up on some features like call waiting or touch tone dialing (required in most places to connect to the internet) but what about call waiting with caller I.D., call forwarding and automatic redial?  If you really use (need) these features keep them.  More often we pay for features we very rarely use.  Is it worth the money?  You decide.  What about cell phones?  Could you cut down to an emergency-only plan to save money?

If you very rarely use your cell phone and mainly travel locally a pager may be a cheaper option for keeping in touch with your kids and family.
