Same-Sex Rivalry
In general, sibling rivalry between two boys who are close in age tends
to be more intense than rivalry between two girls. There are exceptions to
every rule, most notable how the children are treated by their
parents. If one is given more special attention
"favoritism," this is likely to create more rivalry.
Sibling rivalry also tend to be greater when both children are involved
in the same activities and share similar interests. For this reason,
there is a natural trend for the 2nd born to pursue interests that are
different than the first born. In that way, each child develops his
own niche in the family.
Boy-Girl Rivalry
Sibling rivalry is generally the least pronounced between boys and
girls in the family. Different interests and expectations may play a
large part. In fact, boys and girls often develop and maintain a
close emotional bond throughout life.
