How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?

The average weight gain during pregnancy is approximately 25-35 pounds.  A woman who is carrying twins should expect to gain about 50% more, or approximately 30-40 pounds during her pregnancy.  A woman who is underweight may gain more, a woman who is overweight at the start of pregnancy may gain less.  A petite woman may also gain less than a much taller woman (although the percentage of weight gained would be about the same).

Talk to your doctor about the weight gain that is most appropriate for your situation.  Eating healthy and engaging in moderate exercise (such as 30 minutes of walking) each day will help ensure that you are taking a positive step to care for the health of you and your baby.

Remember:  Pregnancy is never a time to diet or cut calories without the specific recommendation of your health care provider.  Eating healthy, well-balanced meals is what both you and your baby need.
