Craft Recipes for Kids
Giant Bubble Mix
1 cup grease-cutting dishwashing liquid
3 tablespoons glycerin (purchase at pharmacies)
10 cups water
Stir (don't shake) all ingredients in large bucket.
Use any household items with holes to make bubbles.. colanders,
spatulas, hangers, bubble wands. Use your imagination!
Sidewalk Chalk
Use for artwork, tic-tac-toe, a game of hopscotch or to
practice your letters!
1 1/2 cups plaster of paris
2 to 3 tablespoons washable liquid or powdered tempera paint
3/4 cup warm water
Large disposable plastic containers for mixing (ex., large butter
tubs).
toilet tissue tubes (or gift wrap tubes cut to toilet roll size)
masking tape or duct tape
To prepare:
1) Cover one end of each tube with tape
2) Pour warm water into container, then sprinkle plaster
of paris slowly into the water while stirring.. stir until the
consistency of pudding.
3) Stir in tempera paint until blended
4) Pour mix into tissue tubes, then tap tubes gently on
the side to eliminate air bubbles.
Let dry a day or two, peel off the mold and start
drawing!
Candy Clay
Not only is this clay fun to mold.. it's also fun to eat!
1/3 cup margarine
1/3 cup light karo syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 box powdered sugar
food coloring
Mix together and have fun!
Soap Crayons
Great for bath time fun!
1 cup mild powdered laundry soap
food coloring
water
Add soap to mixing bowl and add several drops of food coloring to
desired color. Slowly add water by the teaspoon until the soap
is a liquid consistency. Stir well. Pour into ice cube
trays or mini muffin tins. Let dry a few days before using.
Goop
Kids learn a lot through touch. They love the feel of
different textures. This one is sure to delight any child.
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon water
food coloring (a few drops to desired color)
Play Dough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 cups water
2 tablespoon oil
food coloring (a few drops to desired color)
Mix dry ingredients, add water, oil and food coloring. Cook on
stove over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring until it pulls away
from the sides and forms a ball. Let cool.
* Recipe can easily be cut in half by using half of all
ingredients above.
Bright idea:
Let your kids use your cookie cutters to make seasonal items or
let them sculpt their own creation. Masterpieces can be cooked
in the oven on low heat for 20-25 minutes. Finished pieces can be
painted or kids can have fun gluing food items, yarn or buttons on
their design. They can even be used for Christmas tree
ornaments!
Fabulous Finger Paint
1/2 cup soap flakes or detergent
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 envelope unflavored Jell-O
1 cup cold water
2 cups hot water
food coloring (various colors)
in a small bowl, mix Jell-O with 1/4 cup cold water and set aside.
In a saucepan, pour cornstarch and add 3/4 cup cold water..
stirring until dissolved. Add hot water and stir constantly
over medium heat until mixture is clear and boiling.
Remove from heat and blend in the softened Jell-O. Add soap
and stir well.
Allow mixture to cool, then divide mixture into sections and add
food coloring to desired color.
* small baby jars work well for containers!
Face Paint
3-4 drops glycerin (from pharmacy)
2 teaspoons shortening
2 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon flour
food coloring
Mix shortening, flour and cornstarch until it forms a paste. Add
glycerin and stir until smooth. Add food coloring one drop at
a time to desired color.
TIP: Spreading a little cold cream on your child's
face before painting will make washing it off much easier.
Washes off with soap and water.
Fast Finger Paint
1/4 cup liquid laundry starch
1 teaspoon powder paint or 2 drops food coloring
Mix in a cup and have fun!
Poster Paints
1 tablespoon clear liquid detergent
2 teaspoons powder paint
Mix in paper cup. repeat for each color desired.
Makes enough for a one time use.
